Georgia: Gov. Kemp Provides Update on Impacts of Democrat-led Federal Shutdown

EntSun News/11076010
ATLANTA ~ In the midst of the ongoing federal government shutdown, Governor Brian P. Kemp of Georgia has provided an update on the impacts it is having on the state. The shutdown, caused by Democrat senators' refusal to vote for a clean Continuing Resolution, has resulted in the inability to issue Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November.

The SNAP program, which provides food assistance to low-income individuals and families, is federally funded and requires budgetary action from Congress to load money onto beneficiary cards. With no mechanism in place for the state to replace these benefits, thousands of Georgians are left without access to essential food resources.

Governor Kemp expressed his frustration with the situation, stating that Democrat senators are putting "bad politics over the people they claim to care about." He specifically called out Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock for their failure to vote and reopen the federal government. He emphasized that their actions will have a direct impact on families during the holiday season.

The Office of Management and Budget has also informed all states that they will not be able to reimburse any state funds expended on federal programs during the shutdown. This means that Georgia will not receive any financial assistance for programs like SNAP until Congress takes action.

To prepare for this sudden disruption, the Georgia Department of Human Services has been in communication with retailers, food banks, and other organizations for over a week. They have been working together to find alternative resources for those impacted by the discontinuation of SNAP benefits.

Current SNAP recipients may continue to use any remaining benefits on their EBT cards following November 1st but will not receive new benefit payments until the shutdown ends. Unspent funds will remain accessible for nine months from their last use.

Georgians who are affected by this situation are encouraged to seek assistance from local food banks and pantries. The Georgia Department of Human Services has provided resources such as Foodfinder.us and FeedingGeorgia.org, which can help individuals locate free food assistance in their area.

Governor Kemp urges Georgians to contact their two U.S. Senators, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, and urge them to vote to reopen the federal government immediately. He emphasizes that this is the only viable and long-term solution to funding SNAP and other federal programs.

As the shutdown continues, it is clear that the impact on Georgians will only worsen. It is crucial for Congress to take action and end this political stalemate for the well-being of those who rely on federal programs like SNAP.
