George Martinez Launches Re-Election Campaign With Results and a Warning About Outside Interference

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - EntSun -- Anchorage, AK — East Anchorage Assembly Member George Martinez announced his re-election campaign this weekend, pointing to a strong record of results and a clear-eyed vision for the work that lies ahead.

"It's been the honor of my life to represent East Anchorage and fight for our neighborhoods and working families," said Martinez. "From expanding free transit for youth and seniors, to historic housing policy, tackling vacant and abandoned properties, investing in parks and trails, and holding city government accountable."

"Yes, we've made real progress—but there's more work to do," he said. "Anchorage needs world-class snow removal to keep our economy open year-round. We need an adequate behavioral health response to close the gaps left by a broken State system. And we need to break cycles of crime and deterioration with smart, community-rooted solutions."

But now that the campaign filing period is closed, Martinez is calling attention to the troubling tactics already resurfacing from the same groups voters have previously rejected.

"Unfortunately, this group has a history of parachuting in candidates with no real connection to East Anchorage, just to drain community energy and disrupt local progress," Martinez said. "This is the same crowd that tried to redraw the map and gerrymander Muldoon into Eagle River, the same group that pushed for a 1,000-person mass tent camp, and that supported turning our Centennial Park into a homeless camp."

Public records indicate that the former Eagle River candidate, now attempting to run in District 5, continued to claim the tax exemption on his Eagle River property while attempting to use a church-owned, tax-exempt property in East Anchorage as his campaign residence to meet the residency requirement.

"As a previously ordained minister, I find it especially offensive that someone would compromise the integrity of both our electoral process and the faith-based institutions that rely on their tax-exempt status to do real public-interest work," Martinez said.

Still, Martinez emphasized that he's running on a positive record of results and a shared belief in a better future for Anchorage.

"I'm extending a hand to anyone who's been disappointed by this kind of politics before. You deserve better. As a non-partisan, I've heard from both Democrats and Republicans who may not agree with me on every issue, but agree that right is right—and this situation is off. It's not just dishonest, it's disqualifying."

Martinez is calling on the disqualified candidate to do the right thing:

• Pay back any improperly claimed tax exemptions—with interest and penalties,
• Withdraw from the race before the February 3 deadline, and
• Respect the people of East Anchorage enough to follow the rules.
