New York City — Award-winning journalist and cultural storyteller José Martínez makes his long-anticipated literary debut with Your English is Great, But…: A Life Between Languages, Cities, and Grief, a poignant and fearless essay collection releasing Thursday, July 10, 2025. The book is the first title under VOZ NYC, a newly launched publishing imprint committed to bold, bilingual, and boundary-breaking storytelling.

At once intimate and urgent, Your English is Great, But… explores Martínez's life as a queer, bicultural journalist navigating a country where language, grief, and immigration intersect. From newsrooms and ancestral homes to memories of loss and reinvention, the collection offers readers a mirror to the complexities of belonging and a roadmap toward healing.

"This book is the most vulnerable thing I've ever written," said Martínez. "It's for anyone who's ever code-switched their way through life, loved in Spanglish, or been told to shrink themselves to fit in."

The release of this deeply personal work also marks the formal launch of VOZ NYC, a new independent press born from the community storytelling initiative of the same name. With Martínez at the helm, VOZ aims to uplift emerging and established voices whose stories are often sidelined in mainstream publishing.

"VOZ means voice, and this imprint is our declaration," Martínez adds. "We are here to publish the books we needed growing up — stories from the margins that move culture forward."

Your English is Great, But… will be available starting July 10, 2025, on Amazon and wherever books are sold.
