New leadership role expands support for Nevada's end-of-life doula community

RENO, Nev. - EntSun -- DOULA CO-OP of Nevada has named Christine Ruggiero as its End-of-Life Director, a role focused on strengthening Nevada's end-of-life doula community and helping more individuals and families understand the support doulas can provide.

Based in Las Vegas, Ruggiero has been  involved in helping seniors in more than one capacity for over 18 years. In her role at DOULA CO-OP of Nevada, she will provide education and support to practicing end of life doulas, and lead community outreach through presentations, death cafés and legislative work.

"The greatest gifts end-of-life doulas offer are presence and compassion," Ruggiero said. "At a time when people may feel they have lost control, we remind them they still have choices. Our role is not to take over, but to create calm, offer guidance without judgment and help individuals and families move through this transition with dignity and confidence."

Death doulas are nonmedical professionals trained to support people who are dying and those caring for them physically, emotionally, spiritually, and practically. Their work may include caregiver respite, education about the dying process, assistance with advance directives, communication with hospice and healthcare providers, grief support, and the development of vigil or legacy plans. Some doulas also incorporate complementary practices such as sound therapy, Reiki, aromatherapy or guided meditation.

"Christine brings a rare combination of personal experience, practical knowledge and deep respect for the people and families navigating end of life," said Jennifer Campbell, Executive Director of DOULA CO-OP of Nevada. "Her leadership will help us support more doulas, increase public understanding of their work and strengthen access to compassionate end-of-life care across Nevada."

Education will be central to Ruggiero's work, both for doulas and the broader community. She is especially looking forward to mentoring newer doulas and helping them recognize and develop the individual strengths they bring to the field.
