Do I Have to Be Fit to Start BJJ?

EntSun News/11067096
YORK REGION, Ontario - EntSun -- A common question we hear is: "Do I need to be in shape before starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?" The short answer? Absolutely not.

You don't need to be fit to start; you get fit by starting.

Have you ever said to yourself, "Let me start exercising first, then I'll try it out"? It's a common mindset, but the truth is, you don't need a head start. BJJ itself is the workout. From day one, you'll be moving, learning, sweating, and building fitness in a way that's functional and fun.

Whether you're a total beginner or someone returning to activity after a long break, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu meets you where you are. Classes are designed for all levels and include warm-ups, technique, and drilling—at your own pace. Over time, you'll naturally improve your strength, endurance, coordination, and flexibility.

Think of it like this: you don't have to learn how to swim before taking swimming lessons. The same applies to BJJ. You don't have to be in perfect shape to start—you just have to start.

Many of our students began with zero experience. Some hadn't worked out in years. Some joined to lose weight, reduce stress, or feel more confident—and they started seeing those results through BJJ, not before.

Will it be a challenge at first? Sure. But you won't be alone. You'll be supported by instructors and teammates who remember exactly what it's like to be new.

So don't wait until you feel "ready." Show up. Try a class. Your journey doesn't start when you're fit—it starts when you take that first step.
