Cryolab Publishes Guide to Running a Donor Sperm Bank Frozen Store

EntSun News/11106391
Cryolab has published practical guidance for donor sperm banks and andrology laboratories on quarantine storage, witnessed release, straw allocation within donor family limits and shipping straws to fertility clinics.

WEST SUSSEX, U.K. - EntSun -- Chichester, England: Cryolab Ltd, a specialist supplier of cryogenic equipment and consumables to IVF clinics, biobanks and research laboratories worldwide, has published a new guide for donor sperm banks and the andrology laboratories that run them.

A donor sperm bank holds something no other part of an IVF service does: straws that may one day become children in families the bank has never met. For every one of those straws, the bank has to be able to show where it came from, whether it was safe to release, and where it went. The freezing itself is routine. The storage, segregation and allocation around it decide whether a bank runs cleanly.

The guide covers:

Quarantine storage. Under rules retained in UK law, sperm donations from anyone other than a partner are quarantined for a minimum of 180 days before repeat testing, with an exception where NAT testing is used. Cryolab recommends dedicated quarantine vessels, or clearly marked canisters with their own colour scheme, kept separate from released stock.

Witnessed release. Clear repeat results should trigger a recorded, witnessed transfer from quarantine storage to release storage, with the inventory updated in the same session.

Straw format and identification. Sealed high security straws, permanent cryogenic labelling and one visotube per donor keep every straw traceable.

Allocation within the family limit. In the UK a donor's gametes may only be used to create children in up to ten families, so banks supplying several clinics need a clear allocation record covering every straw, including those already shipped.

Shipping to clinics. Released straws travel in charged dry shippers fitted with temperature data loggers, each consignment carrying a straw list that matches the allocation record.

"In a donor bank the straw is the unit of traceability," said a Cryolab spokesperson. "If quarantine and release are physically separate and every allocation is recorded, the bank can answer any question an inspector or a clinic asks, years after the straw was frozen."

Cryolab has supplied the IVF, biobanking and research sectors since 2000. Founder Paul Hague has more than 40 years' experience in cryogenic equipment, and the company holds ISO 9001:2015 certification. Standard UK stock is delivered next day, and Cryolab supplies clinics and laboratories worldwide.
