Columbia: Water Utility continues water main flushing

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia Water Utility has announced that they will be conducting unidirectional flushing of the water distribution system in central Columbia starting on Monday, July 27. This project is expected to last for five weeks and will target the area south of Interstate 70 to Rollins and between Garth Avenue and Highway 63.

According to the attached map, crews will be flushing the pipes between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. during this time. The purpose of unidirectional flushing is to remove mineral deposits from the interior surface of the water mains by forcing water through at a high velocity.

Customers in this area may experience cloudiness or discoloration in their water during this process. The sediment, which is calcium bicarbonate (lime), is not harmful to consume and poses no health hazard. However, if discoloration persists for more than a few hours, customers are encouraged to report their concerns to the City at 573.874.CITY (2489). Water Utility staff will promptly respond to address any issues.
