Columbia: Juneteenth Grant awards announced

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ The City of Columbia has announced the recipients of its Juneteenth Grant program, which aims to support events and initiatives celebrating the holiday. The city received a total of 16 applications, both from new and existing events, and all were awarded funding based on set criteria.

Among the recipients are well-known organizations such as the Columbia NAACP, which will be hosting a Juneteenth Kickoff Celebration, and the COMO Juneteenth group, which will be holding a celebration at Douglass Park. Other events include a vendor expo organized by the Columbia African American Business Alliance and a film experience by The Seven Times.

The grant program was made possible through funding from the Missouri Division of Tourism, which distributed funds to communities across the state to support Juneteenth celebrations. The City of Columbia received $26,982 in grant money, all of which was awarded to the 16 applicants.

To ensure that the grant funds are used effectively and efficiently, there will be a workshop for all recipients. This workshop will provide guidance on how to properly use the funds and also require a post-event report from each recipient. The workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31 at 5:30 p.m. at the Walton Building on South Providence Road.

Juneteenth is an important holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It is celebrated on June 19th each year and has gained more recognition in recent years as communities across the country hold events and celebrations to honor this significant moment in history.

The City of Columbia is proud to support these local organizations in their efforts to celebrate Juneteenth and educate their community about its significance. With these grants, they hope to promote unity and understanding among all residents while honoring those who came before us.
