(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department Responds to Residential Structure Fire on Vandiver Drive
On Saturday, Jan. 24, at 1:23 a.m., the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) received multiple reports of a residential structure fire in the 1300 block of Vandiver Drive. Upon arrival, firefighters were met with a heavy smoke column visible from several miles away and immediately began their response.
According to initial reports, the fire had already caused significant damage to the two-story residential structure and was spreading rapidly. Firefighters quickly entered the home to search for any potential victims while simultaneously working to control the flames with handlines.
However, due to the intense fire conditions and weakened structural integrity of the building, firefighters were forced to evacuate and transition to a defensive operation. This required establishing a second water supply and placing additional handlines around the structure in order to contain the fire.

Despite challenging weather conditions and ice forming on equipment and personnel, CFD was able to bring the fire under control within approximately 40 minutes. A property representative arrived at the scene and confirmed that the structure was vacant and secured. One occupant, who identified himself as a resident of the building, stated that five adults had been seeking refuge in the residence at the time of the fire and all had escaped safely.
No injuries were reported in connection with this incident. However, both Columbia Fire Marshals and Columbia Police are currently investigating its cause. As a precautionary measure, CFD will maintain a presence at the scene throughout the morning.
Motorists are advised to avoid traveling through this area if possible due to ice accumulation and ongoing firefighting efforts. The Columbia Fire Department would like to thank all responding units for their swift action in containing this potentially dangerous situation.
