(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department Responds to Residential Structure Fire on Langham Drive
On Friday, Jan. 23, at 11:18 a.m., the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) received a call about a residential structure fire in the 4300 block of Langham Drive. Within four minutes, CFD units arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke billowing from a two-story home.
Upon entering the home, firefighters discovered flames in the lower level of the structure. The incident was quickly upgraded to a second alarm, prompting a total of 17 CFD units and 41 personnel to respond.
Initially, crews attempted an offensive attack by fighting the flames from inside the home. However, due to the high levels of toxic smoke and heat within the structure, firefighters were forced to evacuate at 11:43 a.m. for their safety. After reassessing the situation, they initiated a defensive attack and were able to bring the fire under control in approximately 35 minutes.
Fortunately, no residents were home at the time of the fire and there were no reported injuries. However, tragically three pets - a dog, bird and fish - perished in the blaze.

After conducting an investigation, Columbia Fire Marshals determined that the cause of the fire was accidental and originated from a clothes dryer.
In light of this incident, CFD would like to remind residents of important safety tips when using or operating a clothes dryer:
- Always have your clothes dryer installed and serviced by a professional.
- Never use your clothes dryer without a lint filter.
- Remember to clean both the lint filter and any lint around the drum before or after each load of laundry.
- Have your vent pipe cleaned annually or hire a professional service for proper maintenance.
- Follow all manufacturer's instructions when operating your clothes dryer and avoid overloading it.
- Keep flammable items such as boxes, cleaning supplies or clothing away from your dryer.
- If any clothing has come into contact with flammable substances, such as gasoline or paint thinner, lay them outside to dry before washing and drying as usual.
- Turn off your clothes dryer when leaving home or going to bed.
- In case of emergencies, call 911. For non-emergencies, call 311.
The Columbia Fire Department urges residents to follow these safety tips to prevent future incidents and ensure the safety of their homes and loved ones.
