Columbia Fire Department responds to commercial structure fire, May 26

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ On Tuesday evening, a commercial structure fire broke out in the 1600 block of Amelia Street in Columbia, Missouri. The Columbia Fire Department (CFD) received the call at 7:13 p.m. and immediately dispatched multiple companies to the scene.

Within three minutes of the initial dispatch, CFD companies arrived to find smoke coming from the second story of a two-story apartment complex. As residents were evacuating, firefighters entered the building to search for any potential occupants and begin extinguishing the flames.

Thanks to their quick response and efficient efforts, the fire was contained to its origin room and brought under control within just 12 minutes of arrival. Fortunately, there were no occupants inside the unit at the time of the incident and no injuries were reported.

A total of five fire companies, two chief officers, one safety captain, and one fire marshal with a team of 20 personnel responded to the scene. The Columbia Fire Marshals Battalion conducted an investigation into the cause of the fire and determined it was due to improperly discarded smoking materials.

The CFD reminds everyone to properly dispose of smoking materials to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
