Columbia: City offices closed Friday, July 3 for Independence Day

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - As the nation prepares to celebrate Independence Day, the City of Columbia has announced that all city offices will be closed on Friday, July 3 in observance of the holiday. However, residents can rest assured that there will be no delay in trash collection services on this day.

According to the Solid Waste Utility, both residential and commercial trash collections will run as scheduled on Friday. The landfill will also be open to the public with normal operating hours. This means that residents can dispose of their waste without any inconvenience due to the holiday.

In addition, the Household Hazardous Waste drop-off event that was originally scheduled for Saturday, July 4 has been canceled by the Solid Waste Utility. This decision was made in light of the holiday and to ensure the safety of residents.

To stay updated on collection schedules and service notifications, residents are encouraged to download the COMO Recycle and Trash App. Any questions or concerns regarding collection schedules can be directed to the Contact Center at 573.874.CITY (2489).

For those planning to use public transportation on Friday, Go COMO - Columbia's public transit system - will operate its normal weekday schedule. However, there will be no fixed-route or Paratransit services available on Saturday, July 4. Instead, free shuttle services will be provided between all six City downtown parking garages and Stephens Lake Park where the City's Fire in the Sky celebration will take place.

The shuttles will run continuously from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m., transporting riders between downtown parking garages and Stephens Lake Park. Passengers can track shuttle locations in real time using the ETA Transit app. The Fire in the Sky event will kick off at 6:30 p.m. with children's activities, live entertainment and food trucks before culminating in a spectacular fireworks display at approximately 9:15 p.m.

To accommodate visitors attending the Fire in the Sky celebration, parking enforcement in both City parking garages and on-street parking spaces will be suspended from July 3-5. During this period, residents can park free of charge in any City parking garage hourly or permit space, as well as at on-street parking spaces. However, it is important to note that reserved or restricted spaces should not be used for parking.

For those looking to stay active during the holiday weekend, the City's Activity & Recreation Center (ARC) will operate at normal hours on Friday, July 3 and at reduced hours on Saturday, July 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Albert-Oakland Family Aquatic Center, Douglass Family Aquatic Center and Lake of the Woods Pool will also be open on July 4 from noon to 5 p.m. However, the Armory Sports and Recreation Center and Hillcrest Community Center will remain closed on Friday.

While administrative offices for both the police and fire departments will be closed on Friday, all other emergency services will still be available. The Columbia Police Department is urging residents to drive safely and within posted speed limits if they are traveling for the holiday. They also remind residents that possessing or discharging fireworks within city limits is strictly prohibited.

In case of any fireworks-related complaints, residents can contact the Boone County Joint Communications non-emergency line at 311. For emergencies, residents should call 911.

Lastly, Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services will also be closed on Friday, July 3. Normal business hours will resume on Monday, July 6 at 8 a.m.
