Colorado Springs: Traffic change coming to US Highway 24, Peterson Road intersection on Monday
EntSun News/11080953
~ Colorado Springs, CO - Starting Monday, January 5, the slip exit lane from eastbound U.S. Highway 24 to southbound Peterson Road will be permanently closed as part of the ongoing safety improvement project in the area. This closure is expected to cause some traffic delays and drivers are advised to use the signalized intersection for southbound turns during construction.
According to officials, crews will begin installing water line casings in the southwest area of the construction corridor near the electric substation in January. Additionally, storm drains are currently being installed at the north end of Peterson Road and Highway 24, which may also cause some traffic delays in the southbound lanes. Drivers are urged to watch for signs in the area for updates.
Colorado Springs Utilities is also working on Peterson Road, south of Highway 24, as they install electrical lines and fiber optic cables. This work is expected to continue through mid-January and temporary traffic signals will remain operational at both intersections of Peterson Road to accommodate upcoming construction traffic. Local signage will be posted to keep drivers informed of any changes or updates.

The main goal of this project is to reconstruct the Highway 24 and Peterson Road Interchange in order to provide a safer, more secure, and efficient transition to the Peterson Space Force Base North Gate. It also aims to support base access control in day-to-day and emergency operations while accounting for increasing traffic capacity on adjacent roadways due to planned growth in the Pikes Peak region. The project also includes plans for complete transportation options within the adjacent corridors such as bus and bicycle lanes, sidewalks, and trails.
