Colorado Springs: Northbound South Academy Boulevard to close Oct. 30-Nov. 2 for utility work
EntSun News/11106664
~ Northbound South Academy Boulevard between Hancock Expressway and Drennan Road will close from 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, until noon Monday, Nov. 2, for installation of water and drainage pipes and road repaving, according to project officials.
Drivers will be detoured west on Drennan Road, north on Astrozon Boulevard and east on Hancock Expressway. Access to Jet Wing Drive from South Academy Boulevard will also be closed during that period; drivers can reach Jet Wing Drive from Hancock Expressway.
A separate closure on Jet Wing Drive is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, and continue through Nov. 20. Colorado Springs Utilities will close part of the road just east of South Academy Boulevard. South Academy project crews will use the closure to install drainage pipes, pave the road and rebuild sidewalks. Coordinating the work is intended to avoid separate closures, officials said.
Nearby driveways will remain open, and residents, employees and customers can access Jet Wing Drive from Hancock Expressway. The project team has coordinated with Colorado Springs Fire Department Station 11 to maintain emergency access.

For the Jet Wing Drive closure, the north detour will take drivers east on Hancock Expressway and south on Jet Wing Drive. The south detour will direct drivers north on Boychuk Avenue, then east on Hancock Expressway. Left turns from southbound Jet Wing Drive onto South Academy Boulevard will be prohibited through Nov. 20.
Officials said drivers should expect occasional lane closures from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, temporary changes to walking routes, relocated bus stops and construction near driveways. Access to nearby businesses will be maintained. Bus information is available at MMTransit.com.
The voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority project aims to improve safety, traffic flow, walking routes and drainage along South Academy Boulevard. It is the road's first major reconstruction since it opened in 1969, according to the project information.
Schedules may change depending on weather. Drivers are advised to follow signs, watch for workers and equipment, and allow extra travel time. Updates are available at ColoradoSprings.gov/AcademyBlvdImprovements or by calling 719-427-6422.
