Colorado Springs: City to install federally required bridge signs for certain heavy emergency vehicles on Platte Avenue bridge over Shooks Run

~ Colorado Springs to Install Weight Limit Signs on Platte Avenue Bridge

The City of Colorado Springs has announced plans to install weight limit signs on the Platte Avenue bridge over Shooks Run. These signs will indicate weight restrictions for certain heavy emergency vehicles, in accordance with federal regulations.

Despite the installation of these signs, the bridge remains safe for everyday public use. Motorists are advised to continue using Platte Avenue as usual, as no closures or traffic delays are expected. The weight limit posting will not affect passenger vehicles, transit buses, bicyclists, or pedestrians.

This measure is required under the federal Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, which mandates that bridges be evaluated for certain specialized heavy emergency vehicles. If a bridge does not meet the required emergency vehicle load rating, it must be posted with weight limit signs.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) recently completed a review of the Platte Avenue bridge, including an analysis of how extremely heavy emergency vehicles may impact aging bridge structures. As a result of this evaluation, the bridge has been deemed in need of weight limit signs and is the first City bridge to receive this posting.

The City's Public Works Department is working closely with the Colorado Springs Fire Department to ensure that emergency response operations continue without disruption. It is possible that additional City bridges may also receive similar postings as evaluations are completed.
