Colorado: Governor Polis Statement on DOE's Announcement to Cancel Critical Grid Connector Corridor

EntSun News/11099806
DENVER ~ In a recent decision, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has canceled the proposed Southwestern Grid Connector Corridor, which would have spanned across parts of Colorado, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. This announcement comes just five days after the DOE had found that the corridor could improve reliability, reduce congestion, meet growing electricity demand, and support lower energy costs.

Governor Jared Polis expressed his disappointment in the cancellation, stating that this effort would have increased reliability and affordability for residents and businesses in Colorado. He also criticized the Trump Administration for canceling "commonsense energy efforts" in states across the country and urged them to follow Colorado's lead in focusing on saving people money.

The proposed transmission line was seen as essential in making the grid more reliable and providing access to low-cost electrical generation for Colorado residents. Will Toor, Executive Director of the Colorado Energy Office, also spoke out against the cancellation, calling it one of many actions by the Trump administration that will drive up power costs for Americans. He cited examples such as tariffs on transformers and solar panels, blocking permits for low-cost wind energy projects, and ordering ratepayers to cover expenses for expensive coal plants.

Toor emphasized that at a time when cost of living is a major concern for many Americans, they deserve better from their national government. The cancellation of this project is seen as another setback in efforts to improve energy affordability and reliability across the country.
