Colorado: Governor Polis Mourns the Loss of Wildland Fire Service Firefighter Nathan Matthews, Orders Flags Lowered on Day of Service

DENVER ~ Governor Polis of Colorado is deeply saddened by the loss of Wildland Fire Service Firefighter Nathan Matthews, who tragically passed away while responding to the Knowles Fire, which later became known as the Snyder Fire. Matthews was involved in a burnover event that also claimed the lives of Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson.

In honor of Matthews' sacrifice and service, Governor Polis has ordered that flags be flown at half staff on the day of his memorial. The date for this memorial has yet to be announced.

Expressing his grief and gratitude for Matthews and his fellow firefighters, Governor Polis stated, "I'm so saddened by the loss of Nathan Matthews. His bravery, and the bravery of his colleagues, is the reason that so many of our homes, communities, and lands have been protected from the fires over the course of this season." He went on to acknowledge that tragedies like this have a profound impact on all firefighters in Colorado and across the country. However, he assured them that they do not mourn alone as the state stands with them in their time of grief.
