Colorado: Governor Polis Memorializes Verbal Disaster Declarations for Ferris and Green Ridge Fires

DENVER ~ In Denver, Governor Polis has taken action to address the recent wildfires in Colorado. Today, he issued two Executive Orders to officially document his verbal disaster declarations for the Ferris Fire in Dolores and Montezuma Counties and the Green Ridge Fire in Routt County.

The first Executive Order memorializes the verbal declaration for the Ferris Fire, which was made on July 8, 2026. The second Executive Order documents the verbal declaration for the Green Ridge Fire, which was made on July 12, 2026. These orders allow state and federal agencies to work together in coordinating efforts for fire suppression, response, consequence management, mitigation, and recovery.

Additionally, these orders also authorize the deployment of the Colorado National Guard in an unarmed capacity to assist with evacuations and mitigation efforts. The Ferris Fire Executive Order also includes a suspension of certain statutes and regulations from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), providing more flexibility for emergency medical service providers to assist with fire rescue under the guidance of the Colorado Department of Public Safety (CDPS).

As of August 3, 2026, the Ferris Fire has burned a total of 64,881 acres in Dolores and Montezuma Counties and is currently 97% contained. The Green Ridge Fire has burned a total of 41 acres as of July 17, 2026 and is now fully contained. These Executive Orders serve as a crucial step in managing these devastating wildfires and ensuring that all necessary resources are available to protect communities affected by these disasters.
