Colorado: Governor Polis, Fellow Governors Call on Congress to Reject Costly, Unlawful Tariffs

DENVER ~ Governors from 18 states, including Colorado Governor Jared Polis, have joined forces in a letter to Congress urging them to reject the Trump Administration's efforts to codify recently invalidated tariffs. The letter, signed by a bipartisan group of governors, calls for clear guardrails on presidential trade authority and highlights the negative impact that tariffs have had on American families and businesses.

Governor Polis stated, "Governors across the country are witnessing the same thing: higher prices for families and greater uncertainty for businesses. I'm proud to stand with governors who agree that sweeping tariffs are bad economic policy." He emphasized that the economy grows by lowering costs and expanding opportunities, not by raising prices through broad tax hikes like tariff increases.

The letter, addressed to Congress, expresses shared concern for the residents of their states who have experienced significant economic harm as a result of the sweeping tariffs imposed by the Executive Branch in the past year. It also urges Congress to take action and restore meaningful control over trade policy to the American people.

Independent analysis has found that tariff policies in place in 2025 cost the average household roughly $1,700. Even after a significant portion of those policies were terminated by the Supreme Court, remaining tariffs are still expected to cost each household at least $600 this year. Small business importers have also been hit hard, paying tens of thousands of dollars more per month in additional duties. Home construction costs have also risen significantly due to tariffs.

In Colorado alone, state analysis found that elevated tariffs contributed to the loss of 265 agricultural jobs and $80 million in GDP. The computer and electronics sector also suffered with 476 jobs lost and $201 million in GDP. A recent poll conducted by Fox News found that 63% of registered voters disapprove of the administration's handling of tariffs.

The Supreme Court's ruling reaffirmed that authority over tariffs rests with Congress under Article I of the Constitution. Following this decision, a federal appeals court rejected the administration's request to delay implementation of the Supreme Court ruling, allowing the tariff refund process to move forward. The governors' letter calls on Congress to uphold the Supreme Court's decision, reject the administration's attempts to codify invalidated tariffs, and enact clear guardrails to prevent future unilateral tariff actions that raise costs on American families and businesses.

The bipartisan effort by these governors highlights the widespread concern over the negative impact of tariffs on the economy and calls for Congress to take action in restoring accountability and stability to our trade system.
