Cloud2Me Uncovers IT Trends Among Small Accounting Firms at Accountex

EntSun News/11065569
EntSun -- Following Accountex London 2025, Cloud2Me reveals insights from its latest survey of 214 accounting professionals. Conducted at the event, the survey offers fresh intelligence on small accounting firms' approaches to IT infrastructure, cloud adoption, and software use.

Highlights from the survey (214 responses):
  • 60% of respondents work in firms with 10 or fewer staff, skewing results toward small-office environments.
  • Despite industry momentum toward cloud, over one-third still maintain an on-site server.
  • Nearly 20% rely on a general, non-specialist IT provider rather than a firm experienced with accounting workflows.
  • Adoption of cloud accounting apps is growing with Xero and QuickBooks leading the market among respondents.
  • Among smaller firms, Sage and TaxCalc remain widely used.

Small Firms Still Using Servers

Despite the digital wave, office-based servers remain common. The hands-on control and perceived ownership of an in-house server still resonate with many smaller accounting practices. Yet, these systems often lack the automation, remote access, and resilience found in cloud alternatives.

"Many smaller accounting firms still favour the familiarity of office-based servers, valuing control and ownership. But this traditional setup often falls short on flexibility, automation, and resilience — areas where cloud solutions increasingly outshine." says Helen Brooks, Head of Commercial

Cloud Apps Becoming the Norm

The Cloud2Me (https://www.cloud2me.co.uk/accountex-2025-what-accountants-told-us/) survey shows cloud uptake gaining momentum. Xero and QuickBooks top the charts, with systems like Sage and TaxCalc still playing important roles, especially in leaner firms.

Specialist vs. Generalist IT Support

Almost one in five respondents let generic IT providers handle their software and support, not firms familiar with accounting systems. This can limit the effectiveness of strategic cloud implementation or create dependencies on generalist support.

Helen adds, "Some firms still rely on general IT support, but accounting systems often benefit from specialist knowledge. Support teams familiar with accounting workflows can resolve issues more efficiently and offer more relevant guidance."

Shaping the Future of Accounting IT

These findings align with Cloud2Me's mission to guide accounting firms through their technology transformations. With servers still in place, disparate software choices, and generic support in play, demand for specialist cloud services remains strong.
