City of Spokane Proposes Directing Funding to Support Families Impacted by Civil Immigration Enforcement
EntSun News/11084049
~ Spokane, WA - Mayor Lisa Brown and members of the City Council have proposed a plan to allocate $100,000 in emergency financial assistance to individuals and families impacted by civil immigration enforcement. This move aims to provide critical support to those facing challenges during times of crisis.
If approved by the City Council, the funds will be directed to the Spokane Immigrant Rights Coalition's Community Justice Fund. This fund provides assistance with housing, healthcare, groceries, and transportation for immigrant families in need.
According to Erin Hut, Communications Director for the city of Spokane, this proposal comes after months of listening to the stories of local immigrant and refugee residents. "The Trump Administration's policies have torn families apart and resulted in job loss," Mayor Brown stated. "These are valuable members of our Spokane community and providing financial support is a tangible way we can support them."
Margot Mejia, Early Childhood Engagement Specialist and Community Advocacy Liaison with Refugee & Immigrant Connections Spokane, expressed gratitude for the city's investment in the Community Justice Fund. "The City of Spokane's $100,000 investment would strengthen immigrant families' ability to remain housed, access timely emergency care, and navigate moments of challenge with dignity and security," Mejia said.

Council President Betsy Wilkerson also emphasized the importance of standing united during difficult times. "Supporting our immigrant community isn't just about providing emergency help; it's about upholding our city's motto that 'In Spokane, We All Belong'," Wilkerson stated. "This allocation demonstrates our commitment to making sure every community member feels safe and supported regardless of their background."
Jerrall Haynes, Director of the Office of Civil Rights, Equity and Inclusion, highlighted how immigration enforcement can impact not just one person but an entire family or community. "By allocating these funds to SIRC, the City of Spokane can help out in those emergency moments and cover basic needs so families can stay on their feet while navigating an incredibly difficult time," Haynes said.
The City of Spokane's website offers more information and resources for local immigrant and refugee residents. This proposal is a step towards creating a city and community where everyone belongs, regardless of their background.
