City of Long Beach to Host Interactive Water Safety Day to Encourage Community Preparedness Ahead of Summer Season
EntSun News/11090572
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - On Saturday, May 16, 2026, the City of Long Beach Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) and the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) Marine Safety Division joined forces to host Water Safety Day. The event took place from noon to 2 p.m. at three different locations: Belmont Plaza Pool, Martin Luther King Jr. Park Pool, and Silverado Park Pool.
Water Safety Day aimed to educate people of all ages and swimming levels on how to stay safe in and around the water. With summer approaching, this free community event provided essential skills for emergency situations and promoted confidence in and around the water.
Mayor Rex Richardson expressed the importance of equipping the community with life-saving skills and ensuring access to knowledge for staying safe. He invited everyone to come out and enjoy a day filled with fun and engaging water safety activities at each of the three City pools.
The event featured interactive and educational water safety stations both in and out of the water. Participants had the opportunity to learn survival floating techniques, have their swim skills evaluated, receive proper lifejacket fitting instructions, learn about water rescue tips, beach safety, pool safety, sun safety, hands-only CPR training, how to call 9-1-1 in an emergency situation, and more.

After completing all the activities at Water Safety Day, participants were encouraged to stay for a free recreation swim from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at each location. It was advised for participants to bring their swimsuits, towels, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses or any other sun protection items they may need.
Registration was required for this event and could be completed online through LB Rec Connect or in-person on the day of the event at any of the three locations. The class numbers for registration were as follows: Belmont Plaza Pool (Class #70901), Martin Luther King Jr. Park Pool (Class #70902), and Silverado Park Pool (Class #70903).
This was the second year that PRM and LBFD partnered to offer this important community preparedness event, demonstrating their shared commitment to water safety education. This year's event also included an additional location at Martin Luther King Jr. Park Pool, expanding access to underserved communities in the city.
Water Safety Day aligns with PRM's Parks Make Long Beach Strategic Plan goal of providing meaningful recreational programming and events by expanding aquatics programs for underserved communities. The event was made possible through funding from the Outdoor Equity Grants Program, created through AB 209 and administered by California State Parks, Office of Grants and Local Services.
