City of Long Beach Reports Increase in West Nile Virus Cases

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) has issued a warning to residents about a recent surge in West Nile virus (WNV) cases. This comes after the first human case of the year was reported in June.

According to the Health Department, there have been a total of 16 human cases reported in Long Beach since the beginning of 2026, as of August 28th. Of these cases, 69% have been classified as neuroinvasive disease, a severe form of illness that affects the brain or nervous system. Additionally, 81% of these cases have required hospitalization. This is the highest number of human cases reported in Long Beach since 2014 when there were a total of 56 cases. Statewide, WNV cases are also higher compared to last year and the average for the past five years.

In response to this increase in cases, the Health Department has implemented enhanced disease surveillance and mosquito-control efforts throughout Long Beach. They are also working closely with regional vector control agencies to monitor and reduce mosquito activity.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected Culex mosquito. While most people infected with WNV do not develop symptoms, those who do may experience fever, body aches, rash, nausea, vomiting and headache. In rare cases, approximately one in 150 people infected may develop more serious complications such as brain inflammation, paralysis or even death. Individuals experiencing severe symptoms such as high fever or muscle weakness should seek medical attention immediately.

Those at higher risk for severe illness include individuals over 55 years old, those with chronic health conditions like diabetes or kidney disease, and those taking medications that weaken their immune system. Unfortunately, there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for WNV.

City Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada is urging residents to take precautions to protect themselves and their communities from WNV. These precautions include applying insect repellent with EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or lemon eucalyptus before going outside, wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when spending time outdoors at dawn and dusk, and installing or repairing door and window screens. Additionally, residents are advised to regularly dump, drain and scrub containers that collect standing water around their homes to prevent mosquito breeding.

The Health Department's Vector Control Program is actively monitoring mosquito activity and conducting control measures in various areas of Long Beach in collaboration with the Greater Los Angeles County Vector Control District and Compton Creek Mosquito Abatement District.
