City of Long Beach Issues a Heat Advisory and Advises Residents to Take Precautions Against Heat
EntSun News/11098999
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - As temperatures continue to rise, Acting City Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada has issued a Heat Advisory for Tuesday, Aug. 4 through Wednesday, Aug. 5. The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures in the mid to high 80s, but with humidity factored in, it could feel as hot as 95 degrees. This increase in heat poses a risk for heat-related illnesses and community members are advised to take precautions.
To combat the heat, City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers and Long Beach Public Library locations will serve as designated cooling centers during their regular business hours. It is recommended to contact these locations beforehand to confirm their availability in case of unexpected closures.
In addition, the Long Beach Multi-Service Center will extend its hours on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with case management services available until 4 p.m.

While everyone is susceptible to heat-related illnesses, older adults, those with chronic illnesses, infants and young children are at a higher risk. It is important for individuals to check on friends, family and neighbors who may be home-bound to ensure they are not affected by the heat.
To stay safe during this heat wave, it is advised to follow these tips:
Stay Cool
- Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing.
- Limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours (noon to 6 p.m.) or take cool showers or baths.
- Seek out air-conditioned spaces when possible.
Hydrate
- Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks as they can cause dehydration.
- Replenish lost salt and minerals with sports drinks or salty snacks.
- Ensure pets have access to water.
Protect Against Heat-Related Illness
- Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher before going outside and reapply every two hours.

- Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection.
- Provide shade and water for pets, as well as avoid hot asphalt that can burn their paws.
- Never leave a child or pet in a parked car or in direct sunlight.
If someone experiences a temperature of 103 F or above, loses consciousness, has a fast and strong pulse, or symptoms last longer than an hour, it is important to seek medical help immediately. Other signs of heat-related illness include heavy sweating, cold and clammy skin, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache, and confusion.
While swimming pools may seem like a refreshing way to cool off, it is crucial to have entry-proof barriers around them and always supervise children near water.
