City of Long Beach Invites Community to 6th Annual Safe Streets Awareness Week

Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach is gearing up for its sixth annual Safe Streets Awareness Week, which will take place from Monday, Aug. 17 to Saturday, Aug. 22. This year's theme, "Long Beach Moves Together," aims to promote traffic safety, active transportation and stronger neighborhood connections through a series of free community events.

According to Mayor Rex Richardson, safe streets are a shared responsibility and it is important for everyone to play a role in making Long Beach a safer place. "Through Long Beach Moves Together, we're bringing our community together to build awareness, strengthen connections and encourage safer choices however people travel throughout our city," he said.

The week will feature four community events from Tuesday, Aug. 18 to Friday, Aug. 21 that offer opportunities for people of all ages to learn about and practice safe driving, biking, walking and rolling.

On Tuesday evening, there will be a virtual Safe Driving Role Models Workshop via Zoom. This workshop is aimed at parents and trusted adults who play a key role in shaping safe teen drivers. It will provide practical tips on distraction-free driving, California teen driving laws and building safer habits. Spanish interpretation will be available through the City's Language Access Program.

On Wednesday evening at Recreation Park (4900 E. Seventh St.), Walk and Roll Long Beach and GreenlightLB will be offering free bicycle and pedestrian safety resources before the start of the Movies in the Park event hosted by Long Beach Park, Recreation and Marine.

Thursday night's event will take place in Belmont Shore (Second Street) during the Stroll and Savor event. The GreenlightLB team will be present with free resources and tips on planning ahead for a sober ride home to keep Long Beach roads safe.

The week will end with the Friday Night Lights Bike Ride starting at Bixby Park (130 Cherry Ave.). Participants are encouraged to light up their bikes with LED bracelets and lights provided by the event organizers.

The City's Department of Health and Human Services Director, Alison King, emphasized the importance of providing practical information and opportunities for people to put safe practices into action. "Safe Streets Awareness Week connects our community with education and resources that can help people make safer choices when walking, biking, rolling or driving," she said.

These events are made possible by funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), Caltrans Active Transportation Program (ATP) and the Port of Long Beach. Over the past year, this funding has helped the City expand traffic safety education and outreach, reaching over 8,300 community members through various initiatives such as school presentations, youth programs, community events and safety demonstrations.

In addition to these events, the City is also implementing other programs to create safer streets for everyone. The Public Works Department's Neighborhood Traffic Management Program is currently addressing neighborhood traffic concerns through data-driven improvements. The Speed Safety System will also be launched this fall to encourage safer driving and reduce speeding along some of the city's highest-need corridors.
