Long Beach, CA ~ The City of Long Beach and Un Mundo de Amigos celebrated the completion of a no-cost preschool at the West Facilities Center in West Long Beach with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 15, 2026.

The preschool, at 2125 Santa Fe Ave., will serve about 50 children ages 2 to 5 through full- and partial-day dual-immersion programs in English and Spanish. Services will be free to families and supported by the California Child Care and Development Fund and California State Preschool Program.

Un Mundo de Amigos Preschool will operate the center, which includes new classrooms and supporting spaces. Renovations at the West Facilities Center also included a new sprinkler system, upgrades to early learning spaces and materials, room dividers, and a replacement play structure.

The project supports the city's Westside Promise Initiative, a 10-year community investment plan focused on challenges facing West Long Beach. The preschool will share the site with a TCC Family Health clinic and a Women, Infants, and Children office.

The city said licensed childcare providers in West Long Beach can serve less than 30% of local demand. The new preschool is intended to expand access to early learning and care, while the co-located services may also support children's health and development and help parents pursue work or education.

"Today, we are celebrating more than the completion of a construction project, we are celebrating an investment in children, families and the future of West Long Beach," Mayor Rex Richardson said.

Un Mundo de Amigos founder and president Laurie Petersen said the program would include family support and provide a welcoming environment for children to learn and grow. Vice Mayor and Seventh District Councilmember Roberto Uranga said the preschool would give families another local place for children to build a foundation for the future.

The project was funded through the Long Beach Recovery Act, with additional support from Measure A and a $1.8 million commitment from Un Mundo de Amigos. The organization said its contribution was secured through grants from the W.M. Keck Foundation and The Rudolph J. and Daphne A. Munzer Foundation, as well as state funds.

The preschool is expected to welcome enrolled children beginning in mid-fall 2026. Information about programs and enrollment is available at unmundodeamigos.com.
