City of Columbia announces first Artist Laureate Audra Sergel

(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The City of Columbia has announced the selection of Audra Sergel as the inaugural Artist Laureate. This new program aims to recognize and celebrate the work and contributions of experienced artists, providing them with opportunities to educate, advocate, and represent the diverse community through their own creative initiatives.

A panel of judges considered local artists from various disciplines including fine and visual arts, performing arts, and literary arts for the position. Applicants were required to submit proposals that included three creative elements: an original work of art inspired by Columbia, an educational workshop or presentation, and a community engagement project.

The chosen artist will also be involved in several City-sponsored events throughout the year. Sergel will serve a one-year term and receive a budget of $5,000 for program-related expenses. The program is made possible through a grant from the Missouri Arts Council.

Sergel is a musician, educator, and creative whose passion for music and community has shaped her work over the past three decades. She has performed her original music on stages across the country as both a solo artist and collaborator.

In addition to her musical talents, Sergel is also a composer and music director for theater productions. She has been teaching students in her private studio, Sergel Music Studio, for over 25 years and is also on the faculty at Stephens College Conservatory of Performing Arts.

Sergel's project as Artist Laureate is titled "When a City Sings: Columbia in Concert." It is an interactive choral and storytelling project that invites people of all ages from the community to share their voices, stories, and values through music.

The project will involve workshops and "Community Voice Circles" hosted in collaboration with local organizations. These events will allow participants to share their experiences and perspectives on living in Columbia. Sergel will then use this material to compose an original choral composition. The project will culminate in a free concert where the piece will be performed by a collaboration of community choirs and musicians.

"It's a tremendous honor to serve as Columbia's first Artist Laureate," said Sergel. "I believe music has a unique way of bringing people together, especially those who may not cross paths in their daily lives. I am excited to spend this year listening, collaborating, and creating a musical portrait of Columbia through the voices of its residents."
