City of Bloomington Announces Rogers Street/Madison Street/Kinser Pike Corridor Study and Requests Public Input

~ Bloomington Launches Study of Major Corridor, Seeks Community Input

The City of Bloomington has announced the launch of a study for the Rogers Street/Madison Street/Kinser Pike corridor and is inviting community members to provide their input. The study area spans from the intersection of Kinser Pike and State Road 45/46 to the intersection of Rogers Street and Country Club Drive. Its main objective is to evaluate potential improvements that will not only reduce fatal and serious injury crashes but also improve accessibility for all users.

Hank Duncan, Safe Streets Program Manager, emphasized the importance of this study, stating that thousands of Bloomington residents and visitors use these roads on a daily basis. He added, "We want to ensure that everyone can safely and comfortably use this major corridor to reach their destination, no matter how they get there."

This corridor study aligns with the City's Vision Zero goal, which aims to eliminate fatal or severe injury crashes on Bloomington roadways by 2039. According to data from the past decade, there have been 1,406 crashes along or across this corridor, resulting in life-altering injuries for 80 individuals.

The study will combine data with people's lived experiences to recommend both short-term improvements and a long-term vision for the corridor. The City staff plans to present a final report to the Transportation Commission later this year that effectively achieves the study's vision and goals.

To kick off the study, City staff will be hosting two "Stroll & Discuss" events along the corridor. These events will provide an opportunity for participants to walk portions of the corridor while discussing existing conditions, potential areas for improvement, and their overall experience as users. The first event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24th from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a second event on Wednesday, March 25th from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

In addition, a Public Workshop will be held on Wednesday, March 25th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Switchyard Park Pavilion, located at 1601 South Rogers Street. This workshop will provide an opportunity for community members to learn more about the study, share their thoughts on the current state of the corridor, and make suggestions for its long-term future.
