With 2021 quickly coming to an end, many families are left struggling to make ends meet during this holiday season. With the lack of jobs and government support, families are wondering ways of transforming frowns into smiles, all while living through a pandemic. Meanwhile, in Memphis, Marvel's Black Panther and Avengers Actress/Stuntwoman Carrie Bernans and MTV's Floribama Shore cast member Candace Renee Rice will return home for their 4th Annual Operation Christmas Give Back. Operation Christmas Give Back started in 2018 with just 10 children but now in their 4th year, their charities The CB Seed Foundation and The URNBtherapy aim to raise over $30,000 and will be providing a Christmas gift to the largest number of children yet, 150 at-risk children from the Memphis Metropolitan area were nominated by their teachers, community, and the Neighborhood Christian Centers to be part of this year's program.
Each child was selected to take part in a fun, but educational, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis online financial literacy program, taking place days before Christmas Day, that will teach them concepts and skills on how to use financial and fiscal responsibility to help them now and in their future. They'll each be surprised with the news that they'll receive a holiday food basket for their family to use over the Christmas Holidays, new clothes, hair care products, and last but not least, that each of them will get a surprise shopping spree at a Memphis Target store on Dec 21st & 22nd. Due to the current pandemic restrictions, the children will be split into groups and taken on different days and times to limit the exposure and for the safety of all participants. During their shopping spree, each child will be able to pick out their own toys and other items for Christmas.

With all the success as a working actor in Hollywood, Carrie Bernans who's been in high-profile TV shows and movies like Netflix's The Harder They Fall still can relate to many of these kids. It wasn't that long ago that Bernans — who also appeared in Black Panther as part of the fierce, all-female fighting force the Dora Milaje — was homeless.
"My mom conceived me at 17, for a while, we moved around every 8 months between family, friends, and people from church. By age 16, things had settled down somewhat." Bernans and her mom took root in Memphis but still struggled financially, and her mom wasn't able to buy her the clothes and school supplies she needed. Once, as a member of the soccer team, Bernans needed a sports bra, but her mother couldn't afford to get her one. "I was crying. I felt so left out." - Carrie Bernans

Bernans says they hope to provide joy for families in Memphis "The city is still suffering and it really still needs light," Bernans says. "It needs hope and that's what we wanted to give to Memphis." Rice says giving back to the youth is crucial in helping to build a better future.
