Cedarville Students Could Graduate With More Than a Degree Through New AI + IP Stewardship Pilot
EntSun News/11099945
Instant IP® initiative helps students identify, protect, and build portfolios of original intellectual property they can carry into the marketplace
COLUMBUS, Ohio - EntSun -- As artificial intelligence reshapes how ideas are created, shared, and replicated, Cedarville University is introducing a new approach to preparing students for the future: helping them graduate with more than a degree.
Through the Cedarville AI + IP Stewardship Pilot, students, faculty, and staff can learn how to identify and protect original intellectual property created during their academic work.
The vision is simple: tomorrow's graduates should not only be able to point to a diploma hanging on the wall. They should also be able to point to a portfolio of original ideas, projects, frameworks, designs, research concepts, creative works, and other intellectual assets they created.
"In the age of AI, knowledge alone is no longer enough," said Dr. Kary Oberbrunner, Berry Chair of Entrepreneurship at Cedarville University and founder of Instant IP®. "Students need to understand what they create, why it has value, and how to steward it. My hope is that Cedarville graduates enter the marketplace not only with a degree, but with an IP portfolio they can prove and protect."

The opt-in pilot is designed to help Cedarville students, faculty, and staff use AI with discernment while respecting authorship, attribution, creativity, and intellectual property. Participants receive access to Instant IP®, a patented blockchain solution that creates a timestamped protection record for original work.
For students, the long-term implications could be significant.
A graduate who can show an employer, investor, collaborator, or future customer a portfolio of original intellectual property demonstrates more than subject-matter knowledge. That portfolio can reveal initiative, creativity, problem solving, entrepreneurial thinking, and the ability to create value.
"College has traditionally been about what you know," Oberbrunner said. "The future will increasingly be about what you can create, what you can prove you created, and what you can responsibly do with it."
The initiative also reflects Cedarville's commitment to approaching artificial intelligence with biblical discernment and intellectual integrity. Rather than being anti-AI or blindly pro-AI, the pilot encourages responsible use of emerging technology while recognizing the value of human authorship and God-given creativity.

Instant IP® is providing participating users with free protection credits as part of the pilot.
Oberbrunner believes the concept could influence a much larger conversation within higher education.
"What if the question colleges asked was not simply, 'Did our students earn a degree?'" he said. "What if we also asked, 'What did they create and how can they steward and leverage it?' That changes the conversation from education alone to value creation."
