California: Governor Newsom Issues Proclamation Declaring Special Election for CA Congressional District 1
EntSun News/11082215
~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a special election for California's first congressional district on August 4, 2026. The proclamation was issued today in response to the vacancy left by the passing of Representative Doug LaMalfa.
In the proclamation, Governor Newsom stated that a special election will be held within the first congressional district to fill the vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The announcement comes after a recent drop in unsheltered homelessness in California and new investments to expand housing and services across the state.
The governor also announced $419 million in funding for the Homeless Housing Assistance Program (HHAP) to address homelessness in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and San Diego. This investment is part of California's efforts to reduce unsheltered homelessness, which has been on a steady decline since January 2024.

In addition to addressing homelessness, Governor Newsom also announced free entry to California State Parks on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This decision stands in contrast to President Donald Trump's recent decision to replace free entry to National Parks on MLK Day with his own birthday and erase civil rights history.
California has also made strides in reducing theft of food and cash benefits through innovative fraud-fighting technologies. Since January 2024, reported theft has decreased by approximately 83%, thanks to measures such as chip-and-tap-enabled EBT cards.
These recent developments showcase California's commitment to addressing important issues such as homelessness and fraud while upholding values of equality and inclusivity. As the state prepares for its upcoming centennial celebration of women's suffrage, it continues to lead by example in promoting social justice and progress.
