Boston: Snow Emergency and Parking Ban to End Today, February 24, at 6 p.m.; School Resumes Tomorrow, February 25

~ Boston, MA- After a record-breaking blizzard dumped 17 inches of snow on the city, Boston residents are bracing for more snow later this week. In preparation for the upcoming storm, Mayor Michelle Wu has announced that all space savers must be removed by 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 26th. This is 48 hours after the end of the snow emergency.

According to the press release from the city, space savers are prohibited at all times in the South End and Bay Village neighborhoods. Any space savers found in violation of these rules will be collected and discarded by the Public Works Department (PWD).

Mayor Wu expressed her gratitude to all city workers for their tireless efforts in keeping residents safe during this extended period of heavy snowfall. She also thanked residents for doing their part in clearing sidewalks and being good neighbors.

Thanks to the intensive efforts of city workers, including large-scale daytime snow removal operations, major thoroughfares have been cleared and are now passable. However, with more snow expected tomorrow, crews will continue their efforts throughout the week.

Last night alone, crews removed a total of 165 loads of snow, totaling 4620 cubic yards. Today's focus will be on creating snow piles around schools in preparation for tonight's snow removal operations. The PWD will also resume melting operations at several snow farms to make room for more removal efforts.

In light of these ongoing cleanup efforts, Boston Public Schools and central offices will reopen on Wednesday, February 25th.

In addition to city teams working tirelessly to clear roads and sidewalks, the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood Services hosted citywide snow shoveling meet-ups today. These events brought together volunteers to help clear sidewalks, curb ramps, and other areas of concern during snow emergencies.

It is important to note that property owners are responsible for shoveling sidewalks to a 42-inch path of travel. Shoveling or plowing snow into the street is strictly prohibited. Violators will be issued citations and fines for not maintaining safe sidewalks or for pushing snow into the street. Residents are encouraged to use 311 to report any unshoveled sidewalks.

Trash and recycling collections will also experience a one-day service delay due to the ongoing snow removal efforts. A full list of affected neighborhoods can be found on the city's website.

Residents are reminded to call 911 if they come across individuals experiencing homelessness or vulnerable individuals who appear immobile, disoriented, or underdressed for the weather. For non-emergencies, residents can call 311 for assistance.
