~ Boston City Council Recognizes and Celebrates Lunar New Year 2026, Honoring AAPI Communities
Boston City Council has officially recognized and celebrated the upcoming Lunar New Year, honoring the rich cultural heritage and contributions of the city's Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The resolution, offered by Councilor Flynn, highlighted that this year's Lunar New Year will begin on February 17th and mark the Year of the Horse, traditionally celebrated for a week from New Year's Eve.
The vibrant AAPI population in Boston includes one of the largest Chinatowns in the United States, a thriving Vietnamese community in Dorchester, and many smaller AAPI neighborhoods across the city. The resolution emphasized the vital role AAPI residents play in Boston as neighbors, healthcare workers, educators, small business owners, policymakers, military members, and youth coaches.

However, the resolution also acknowledged the challenges that AAPI communities have faced throughout history. This includes events such as the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act and Japanese Internment during World War II. Additionally, there has been an increase in racist incidents and hate crimes against AAPI individuals since the start of COVID-19. Despite these challenges, the Council recognized both the contributions and resilience of AAPI residents.
In reaffirming its commitment to celebrating and supporting AAPI and immigrant communities, whose experiences and cultural heritage enrich Boston and the nation as a whole. The Council encourages all residents to join in on festivities such as lion dances, banquets, and other traditional celebrations as a way to honor Lunar New Year and recognize the remarkable contributions of Boston's AAPI communities.
As we enter into this new year according to the lunar calendar, let us all come together to celebrate diversity and unity within our city. Let us also remember to support our AAPI neighbors who have played an integral role in shaping Boston into what it is today.
