Boston: May is Asthma Awareness Month
EntSun News/11091653
~ Boston, MA - Asthma is a chronic lung disease that affects millions of people in the United States, and many residents in Boston are no exception. The city's air quality, housing conditions, and environmental factors can contribute to flare-ups and breathing difficulties for those living with asthma. In light of this issue, Councilors Pepén, Mejia, and Louijeune have introduced a resolution to recognize May as Asthma Awareness Month in the City of Boston.
The resolution describes asthma as a condition that causes the airways to narrow, swell, and produce extra mucus, making it difficult to breathe. This is especially true when air quality is affected by pollution, allergens, climate changes, and other irritants. According to the American Lung Association, more than 27 million people in the United States live with asthma. While there is no cure for this disease, the resolution states that lifestyle choices and climate resiliency policies aimed at reducing pollution can help manage it.

The Health of Boston 2023 Asthma Report revealed some concerning statistics about asthma in the city. It documented higher prevalence among Black adults compared to White adults and higher rates among those with lower household incomes and residents living in publicly supported housing. However, there is some good news as well - from 2017 through 2021, asthma-related emergency department visit rates have declined across all age groups. However, higher visit rates still remain among Black and Latinx patients compared to White patients. Children between the ages of 0 and 17 experience the highest rates of visits.
The resolution also highlights the efforts of the Boston Public Health Commission's Asthma Prevention and Control Program. This includes programs such as Breathe Easy at Home Program and Boston Asthma Home Visiting Program which work with City partners to address housing conditions that may trigger asthma flare-ups.
In recognition of these issues surrounding asthma in Boston, the Council has formally declared May as Asthma Awareness Month in the city. They have also expressed their commitment to working towards clean air across all neighborhoods. With continued efforts and awareness, it is hoped that the impact of asthma on daily life for Boston residents can be reduced.
