Boston: Council Supports Legislation Allowing Road Safety Cameras to Improve Traffic Safety

~ During the latest Council meeting, members of the Council showed their support for state legislation that would give cities and towns, including Boston, the ability to implement road safety camera programs. These programs would serve as effective tools in addressing dangerous driving behaviors and improving traffic safety on the streets.
The resolution adopted by the Council endorses Bills S.2344 and H.3754, also known as "An Act Relative to Traffic Regulation Using Road Safety Cameras." If passed, these bills would grant municipalities the option to use road safety cameras to target issues such as speeding, red-light violations, and other hazardous driving behaviors. Currently, Boston does not have the authority to implement such programs under Massachusetts law.

The City has already taken steps to reduce vehicle speeds by lowering the default speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph in 2017.
