Boston: Building Material Reuse Assessment Program RFP
EntSun News/11079912
~ Boston, MA - The City of Boston's Environment Department has announced a new program aimed at promoting sustainable building practices and reducing waste. The Building Material Reuse Assessment Program will conduct a thorough study of materials available at qualifying renovation and demolition sites in the city, with the goal of identifying reusable and recyclable materials and creating a plan for their management.
According to the press release, the selected vendor will be responsible for developing an assessment protocol and tool to record an inventory of materials suitable for reuse. They will also conduct assessments at various renovation and demolition sites, providing an inventory and management plan to each property owner or project manager. Additionally, detailed inventory data will be shared with the Environment Department.
The program hopes to encourage reuse and recycling in order to ease demand for new building products and reduce landfill waste. This is part of a larger effort to move away from a linear material economy, which has significant negative impacts on both ends - from resource extraction to waste disposal.

One of the key benefits of this program is its potential to preserve Boston's historic character. By salvaging irreplaceable heritage materials from renovation or demolition sites, these elements can be used in period-appropriate or new projects. This not only reduces waste but also helps maintain the city's unique architectural identity.
The City of Boston is seeking a diverse range of buildings to participate in this initiative. Sites will be selectively approved in order to achieve a broad and representative sample across different building types, uses, sizes, ages, and locations.
Interested vendors can attend a pre-proposal Q&A session on December 17th via Zoom or submit proposals by January 14th through the City of Boston Supplier Portal. The deadline for submissions is 5:00 PM EST on January 14th.
This program marks an important step towards promoting sustainability in Boston's construction industry and reducing its environmental impact. With careful assessment and management of building materials, the city hopes to create a more circular economy and preserve its historic character for future generations.
