~ Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has announced that the city will be hosting its annual "A Day of Celebration in Honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." in partnership with Boston University. The event, which will take place on Monday, January 19 at 12:00 p.m., will be held at Metcalf Hall on the second floor of the George Sherman Union at Boston University.
The celebration will be live-streamed on Boston.gov and aired on Boston City TV for those who are unable to attend in person. This year's event is particularly significant as it marks the first time Mayor Wu has presided over the celebration since taking office.
In a statement, Mayor Wu expressed her gratitude to Boston University for their partnership in continuing this tradition and allowing the community to come together to honor Dr. King's legacy and carry his message of hope and community forward.
"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s historic life, transformative leadership, and enduring legacy are central to the City of Boston," said Mayor Wu. "This year's celebration highlights the Kings' stand for justice and honors Dr. King's influence that continues to inspire action and change in our city."

The theme for this year's King Day Celebration is "Justice Indivisible: Fighting Racism, Greed, and War," inspired by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1967 Three Evils of Society speech. In this speech, he named racism, poverty, and militarism as persistent threats to American democracy.
The 90-minute program will feature a keynote address by writer, scholar, and cultural organizer Dr. Eve L. Ewing from the University of Chicago. Ewing is an award-winning author known for her work with Marvel Comics and her book Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism.
In addition to Ewing's address, there will also be readings from two Boston University students who are graduates of Boston Public Schools. The program will also include musical performances by ZURI, a student band from Berklee College of Music.
Boston University President Melissa Gilliam expressed her pride in the university's connection to Dr. King, who was an alumnus of the school. She also highlighted the importance of upholding human rights and providing opportunities for all people, which aligns with the values espoused by Dr. King.

In previous years, notable figures such as U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley, Governor Deval Patrick, and civil rights activist Topper Carew have served as keynote speakers at the celebration. Other prominent individuals, including Boston Poet Laureates Sam Cornish and Danielle Legros Georges, have also participated in past events.
