Bloomington: 2026 Be More Awards to Celebrate Outstanding Volunteers and Volunteer Groups

~ Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Volunteer Network is gearing up for their highly anticipated annual event, the 2026 Be More Awards. This year's ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 28th at 6 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater located at 114 E. Kirkwood Ave.

The Be More Awards are a way for the city to recognize and honor the outstanding efforts of community volunteers who often go unrecognized. In addition to presenting eight awards, this year's event will also feature a report from the Monroe County Youth Council on their Global Youth Service Month projects and a progress report on the Bloomington Volunteer Network's Be the Change Challenge.

Among those being honored at this year's ceremony are recipients of various awards such as the Be More Engaged Award, Be More Creative Award, Be More Energized Award, Be More Bloomington Award, Be More Involved Award, Be More Phenomenal Award, Be More Dedicated Award, and the highly coveted Be More Impactful Award.

The recipient of the Be More Engaged Award is South Central Community Action Program (SCCAP) Thriving Connections - Captains and Allies for their dedication to volunteer activities and programs on behalf of their employer. Winnie Dong will be receiving the Be More Creative Award for her volunteer work within the arts community as creator and producer of WFHB Youth Radio's "What the Health?!" The Serve IT Volunteers will be honored with the Be More Energized Award for their service to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington.

David Meyer will be presented with the prestigious Be More Bloomington Award for his outstanding service in addressing issues such as housing and homelessness, immigration, and food insecurity through his work with refugee families through Rotary Clubs of Bloomington and Bloomington Rotary Foundation. Israel Herrera will receive the Be More Involved Award for his 20 years of volunteer service to various community organizations including the City's Board of Parks Commissioners.

Matt Stonebraker will be recognized with the Be More Phenomenal Award for his exceptional leadership through board, commission, or committee involvement with Bloomington Developmental Learning Center. Jo Ann Main will be honored with the Be More Dedicated Award for her 15 years of service to the students of Unionville Elementary School.

The recipient of the Be More Impactful Award, which honors the volunteer or volunteer group of the year, is Bloomington Severe Winter Emergency Shelter Volunteers for their work in providing shelter to unhoused individuals during severe weather events.

Each award recipient will also receive a $1,000 grant award for the primary nonprofit organization they serve, thanks to the generous support of the Community Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County. A full list of this year's awards, nominees, and sponsors can be found at bton.in/bemore26.
