Audiologist: The Clinically Interesting Part of Oticon's New "Dual AI" Hearing Aid Isn't the AI
EntSun News/11099589
Kira Savin, Au.D., of California Hearing Center on listening effort, why preserving background sound may matter to the brain, and why the larger clinical problem remains the millions of adults who never get treated at all
SAN MATEO, Calif. - EntSun -- Oticon today announced Oticon Reveal™, described as the world's first hearing aid powered by "Dual AI." Kira Savin, Au.D., of California Hearing Center, says the news is noteworthy for a design choice, not the AI headline.
"The letters A and I are doing a lot of marketing work right now," Dr. Savin said. "What's actually notable is that instead of deleting background sound, this device keeps and balances it. That's a bet on how the brain works. Whether it pays off is answered in the fitting room, not a press release."
Hearing loss is a brain problem
Modern audiology treats hearing loss as increased cognitive workload. A degraded signal forces the brain to use attention and working memory to reconstruct speech—listening effort that leaves many patients exhausted after social situations.

Conventional noise reduction can improve intelligibility but removes spatial cues the brain uses to orient. Research links untreated hearing loss to broader risks: the 2024 Lancet Commission lists it among 14 modifiable dementia risk factors (about 7% of cases). The ACHIEVE trial (2023) found no overall cognitive benefit, though a higher-risk subgroup showed a substantial relative reduction in decline. "It did not show hearing aids prevent dementia in everyone," Dr. Savin noted. "Patients deserve the actual result."
Hearing aids are FDA-cleared only to compensate for impaired hearing, not to prevent dementia.
What Oticon announced
Oticon Reveal runs Speech AI (enhancing nearby speech) and Context AI (balancing surrounding sounds) simultaneously. The company claims a 60% stronger brain response and industry-leading speech access, citing unpublished data, plus Bluetooth LE Audio and Auracast™ support. These are manufacturer claims; California Hearing Center has not verified them.

Most hearing loss still goes untreated
About 1 in 8 Americans aged 12+ has bilateral hearing loss. Only ~16% of adults 20–69 who could benefit have ever used hearing aids; among those 70+, fewer than 1 in 3 have.
"Product launches generate upgrade calls," Dr. Savin said. "Far fewer come from people who have never had an audiogram. The best device does nothing for someone unevaluated—and a poorly fit device can underperform a cheaper one fitted correctly."
California Hearing Center is independent and dispenses multiple brands (Oticon, Phonak, Widex, ReSound, Starkey, Signia) based on clinical need. Real-ear verification is standard.
