Prince George's County Bar Association honors a career defined by mentorship, civic engagement, and institutional bridge-building
BOWIE, Md. - EntSun -- Justice Michele Hotten, Joan Christian-Robinson, Gabriel J Christian, Esq. Elizabeth "Betty" Hewlett Esq., Janelle Colbert, Esq. Prince George's County Bar Association presented Attorney Gabriel J. Christian, Esq., Managing Attorney of the Law Offices of Gabriel J. Christian & Associates, LLC, with the Judge James Taylor Award for Distinguished Service, recognizing more than three decades of contribution to the legal profession, the courts, public education, and civic life.
The recognition, announced by outgoing Bar President Janelle Colbert, Esq., honors a career extending beyond legal practice into mentorship, institutional service, and community development across county, state, and national arenas. Although approved earlier in 2025, the award was later surprise-presented during a joint community holiday gathering hosted by The Colbert Law Firm, LLC and the Law Offices of Gabriel J. Christian & Associates, LLC, reflecting the collegial traditions of the local bar.
Throughout his career, Christian has focused on strengthening the relationship between legal institutions and the communities they serve. His professional record includes service as Judicial Commissioner for the Maryland Court of Appeals (2007–2014), Commissioner on the Maryland Governor's Commission on Caribbean Affairs for Workforce Development and Education (2012–2016), and Member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2014–present). He also served as President and board member of the East Coast Chapter Tuskegee Airmen Inc. (2018–2020) and has mentored Prince George's County Public Schools students for more than three decades.

The Bar Association also recognized his mentorship award from the Prince George's County Board of Education and his guidance to law students and young attorneys. In 2022, his civic leadership received national recognition through a presidential commendation honoring public service.
Speakers at the presentation highlighted Christian's role as a bridge between civic institutions and the Caribbean-American community, noting his consistent engagement in diaspora leadership and public service initiatives. Through mentorship in the Courts Law Links Student Summer Mentorship Program, he has helped students pursue careers in law and public service while encouraging civic participation.
Colbert stated, "His career reflects excellence in the law, sustained mentorship of young people, leadership within the Caribbean-American community, and a deep commitment to public service. He exemplifies the ideals this award was created to honor."
Named for Judge James Taylor, a Tuskegee Airman and the first African American judge to serve on the Circuit Court for Prince George's County, the award recognizes integrity, courage, and service to both the courts and the public. Christian's career reflects those principles through decades of legal practice, mentorship, and civic engagement spanning multiple generations of students, attorneys, and community organizations.
