EntSun News/11088170
RICHMOND, Calif. - EntSun -- The City of Richmond, in partnership with Alten Construction (https://www.altenconstruction.com/), a full-service San Francisco Bay Area commercial construction company, recently marked the start of the renovation and modernization of the historic Richmond Main Library with a groundbreaking ceremony.
Located at 325 Civic Center Plaza in Richmond, the Richmond Main Library is the Main Branch of the Richmond Municipal Public Library. The historic Richmond Main Library project includes approximately $22.1 million in construction improvements and is part of a broader $34.4 million City investment, which will include full replacement of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems; meeting essential fire-life-safety, seismic and accessibility standards; complete interior renovation; and hazardous materials abatement.

Key project components also involve roof replacement, installation of a new solar PV system, conversion to an all-electric system, exterior glazing replacement, elevator replacement and various site and landscaping improvements. The project targets LEED Silver certification, serving as a model of sustainability and energy efficiency.
The updated Richmond Main Library will offer an expanded storytime area with comfortable furniture for families and young children to enjoy, a dedicated teen space, private study rooms, additional community rooms for programming, meetings and events, and a local history room. The project will modernize the historic 1949 facility, improve seismic safety, enhance accessibility and provide updated community spaces for residents of all ages.
On Wednesday, March 25, the City of Richmond hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of construction.

"The Richmond Main Library is one of the city's most important civic and historic assets," said Daniel Chavarria, director of public works. "This project represents a major investment in safety, accessibility, preservation and service to our community. Once completed, it will provide residents with a modernized library experience, while honoring the character and legacy of this historic building."
Alten Construction will lead construction on the project, with a projected completion of winter 2027. During construction, the Richmond Main Library will continue services at the temporary Auditorium Branch Library, located at 403 Civic Center Plaza.
The project is made possible by a $9.7 million grant from the California State Library awarded in October 2022. The project is also funded by $2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds and $22.5 million in local funding to create an almost $34 million budget.
