AI Can Now Cry on Cue. A Free Field Guide Helps Families Spot Manipulation From People and AI

EntSun News/11106184
The authors of Beyond the Red Flags are available for interviews on how children, parents and grandparents can recognize manipulation in a changing world, whether it comes from a groomer, a scammer or a machine.

AUSTIN, Texas - EntSun -- Last week, Block, the company led by Jack Dorsey, showed off Dessa, a voice AI that laughs, pauses and cries. TechCrunch called it "eerily human."

Today, Austin nonprofit reefcares.org released Beyond the Red Flags: A Field Guide to Emotional Manipulation from People and AI, by co-founders Billy Joe Cain and Jacqueline Cain. It is free to download, print and share, and in paperback on Amazon.

A voice that cries is not proof of a person. The tactics are the same whether they come from a groomer, a scammer or a machine, and the Field Guide names each one. Fake emergencies: a sudden crisis that sounds real but is made up, used to make you act before you think. Sycophancy: when an AI flatters you and agrees with you instead of telling the truth.

Children meet AI in apps, games and homework help. Grandparents get fake-emergency calls in voices that sound more real every month. Written for adults, the Field Guide helps the grown-ups in a child's life learn the patterns first and pass them on.

"The abuse prevention field desperately needs a unified lexicon and real clarity on how psychological manipulation works," said Billy Joe Cain. "This book is our answer. The world our kids and grandparents live in is changing fast. The tactics aren't. Once you can name them, you can see them, whether they come from a person or a machine."

"Beyond the Red Flags gives us language for the patterns we can feel before we know how to explain them," said Jessy Phares-Cunningham, Professional Human · Trauma Survivor, Thrivor™ & Advocate. "A tool can be a scalpel or a shiv; learning to recognize what's being used, how, and to whose benefit matters. Awareness is a tool you get to take with you."
