AARP Foundation Experience Corps Mesa Seeking Volunteers

~ The City of Mesa is on the lookout for volunteers aged 50 and above to join the AARP Foundation Experience Corps Mesa program. This community-based volunteer program aims to help students in kindergarten through fourth grade become confident readers.

Since its launch in January 2024, Experience Corps Mesa has made a significant impact, serving over 500 students from Mesa Public Schools. The dedicated volunteers have contributed more than 12,000 hours of service. During the 2025-26 school year, an impressive 90% of participating students showed improvement in their reading fluency. Research has shown that students who can read proficiently by the end of third grade have a higher chance of graduating high school on time, with a rate of 96%, compared to only 84% among those who have not yet reached reading proficiency.

Dr. Matt Strom, Superintendent of Mesa Public Schools, expressed his appreciation for the program, stating that "Experience Corps represents the very best of what a community can accomplish when generations come together in support of children." He emphasized the importance of every student being given the opportunity to become a confident reader as it is crucial for success in all subjects and future pathways. Dr. Strom also expressed gratitude towards the partnership between the City of Mesa and AARP Foundation as they continue to expand this program and welcome more retirees to share their time, wisdom, and experience with the next generation.

In the upcoming school year (2026-27), Experience Corps Mesa plans to expand its reach to 12 Mesa Public School sites, including two new schools joining the program. With over 70 volunteers expected to work with approximately 250 students in grades K-4, this expansion will make a significant impact on even more young learners.

Mesa Mayor Mark Freeman also shared his thoughts on this initiative, stating that "public service has been the foundation" of his life and acknowledging how one person's actions can make a difference when they choose to serve others. He commended AARP Foundation Experience Corps for providing retirees with another opportunity to answer the call by helping young students develop essential reading skills. Mayor Freeman also highlighted Mesa's community spirit, where people step up, give back, and invest in the next generation. He believes that by sharing their time, experience, and wisdom, these volunteers are not only strengthening schools but also families and the future of the city.

Mioshi Moses, AARP Foundation Vice President of Volunteer Programs, emphasized the importance of bringing generations together through Experience Corps. She stated that this program empowers older adults to share their experience and compassion with young learners while helping students build literacy skills for a brighter future. Moses also expressed pride in partnering with the City of Mesa and Mesa Public Schools to bring dedicated volunteers into classrooms where they can make a meaningful difference in the lives of elementary students.

To qualify as an Experience Corps volunteer, one must be at least 50 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and pass a background check process with Mesa Public Schools. All volunteers receive extensive training and on-site support to ensure they are equipped to make a positive impact on students' lives.

Experience Corps Mesa is currently holding informational sessions for prospective volunteers to learn more about the program, complete an application, and interview with City staff. Interested individuals are encouraged to sign up before the final session on August 19th. By joining AARP Foundation Experience Corps Mesa, volunteers can make a meaningful difference in their community while also gaining valuable experiences themselves.
