When a Bone Marrow Transplant Is the Only Option
EntSun News/11089945
Nonprofit highlights the financial and emotional toll of transplant and the critical support patients need to reach treatment.
DALLAS - EntSun -- For patients facing diseases like blood cancer, aplastic anemia, and sickle cell disease, a bone marrow transplant can be the only path to survival. While the procedure itself can save lives, the transplant journey is often overwhelming—marked by fear, uncertainty, and mounting financial pressure.
Patients are forced to stop working during treatment, just as expenses rapidly increase. Travel, temporary housing, and basic living costs can quickly become unmanageable, placing additional strain on families already navigating a life-threatening diagnosis.
The Icla da Silva Foundation works to bridge this gap. By providing financial, emotional, and logistical support, they help patients move forward with treatment when barriers might otherwise stand in the way. For some families, this support is the difference between accessing care and going without it.
"Too many patients face impossible choices when preparing for a transplant," said Airam da Silva, President of the Icla da Silva Foundation. "Their focus should be on survival and recovery, not whether they can afford to get there. That's where support becomes critical."
