Walnut Hills Launches Off-Grid Hempcrete Homes and Eco-Retreat in Western NC

FRANKLIN, N.C. - EntSun -- FRANKLIN, N.C. – July 2025 – Macon Sustainable Development Company has officially launched construction of Walnut Hills, a first-of-its-kind eco-resort and off-grid homestead community nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The 153-acre site integrates regenerative homebuilding, conservation, and eco-tourism, anchored by handcrafted homes made from hempcrete, cordwood, and recycled materials.

The flagship structure—an Earthship-inspired 3-story residence—is now under development using natural building methods, volunteer-led workshops, and passive solar design. Additional plans include four affordable 2-bedroom rental cottages built under North Carolina's $30K owner-builder exemption, designed to attract eco-conscious tenants and support sustainable tourism in Macon County.
