Vertical Oyster Gardens (VOG) Assembly Event Scheduled for April 18, 2026

EntSun News/11089335
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - EntSun -- \The Halifax River Yacht Club, in partnership with Daytona MedSpa and Oysters for my Neighborhood, will host an event to assemble Vertical Oyster Gardens (VOG) on Saturday, April 18. The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the open space across the street from the yacht club, located at 331 S Beach St., Daytona Beach, in front of the pickleball courts.

The workshop is designed to bring the community together for a hands-on conservation effort supporting local waterways and marine life, with a goal of building 500 Vertical Oyster Gardens and recruiting at least 100 volunteers to help assemble them. Vertical Oyster Gardens provide habitat for oysters that help improve water quality and support marine ecosystems, and a single adult oyster can filter up to about 50 gallons of water per day.

"We're incredibly passionate about this project and grateful to partner with Oysters for my Neighborhood and the Halifax River Yacht Club to make it happen," said Sara Chrisman, owner of Daytona MedSpa and a member of the Halifax River Yacht Club. "This is a hands-on way for our community to come together, support oyster restoration and help improve the health of the Halifax River for the neighbors, wildlife and future generations who depend on it."

About Oysters for my Neighborhood

Oysters for Neighbors grew out of a local effort started by Ormond Beach resident Capt. Chuck Gleichmann and Stroll, Ormond Beach Waterfront magazine after watching the Halifax River's water clarity decline over the past two decades. After reading about oyster gardens improving water quality in Tampa Bay, Gleichmann worked with the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida and Whitney Marine Laboratory, then rallied riverfront residents to begin assembling and installing Vertical Oyster Gardens on private docks to help restore the river. As of mid-2025, more than 1200 VOGs were already in the water, and the program has continued expanding toward a goal of 3000-plus gardens while recruiting additional dock owners and volunteers to grow the impact.
