UK Workers Unaware of New Legal Rights as Biggest Employment Law Change in 25 Years Takes Effect

EntSun News/11089428
Employment Rights Act 2025 began coming into force 6 April 2026 — but millions of UK workers remain unaware of what changed. Start My Claim (startmyclaim.ai) has launched free tools to help workers understand rights, check deadlines, build claims

ILFORD, U.K. - EntSun -- The most significant overhaul of UK workers' rights in over 25 years began coming into force on 6 April 2026. The Employment Rights Act 2025 introduced Statutory Sick Pay from the first day of illness, made paternity leave and parental leave day-one rights, and launched the Fair Work Agency as a new single enforcement body for labour rights. From 1 January 2027, the qualifying period for unfair dismissal will reduce from two years to six months, extending tribunal rights to millions of workers currently excluded. The compensatory award cap will also be removed on the same date. Yet awareness among workers remains low. Employment tribunal claims reached a record high of 615,000 in 2023/24, and with millions more workers gaining tribunal access from January 2027, demand for accessible legal support is expected to rise sharply.

Start My Claim (startmyclaim.ai) has launched a free suite of tools to help UK workers navigate the new legislation and any existing claims. The Employment Rights Act 2025 Tracker provides a live timeline of which provisions are now in force. The ET1 Deadline Checker gives workers their exact tribunal filing deadline -- missing the three-month limit is the single most common reason valid claims are permanently lost. The Eligibility Checker walks workers through five questions to establish whether they have grounds to claim. A Settlement Value Calculator estimates what a claim might settle for at ACAS conciliation. An Employment Law Updates page is updated daily with confirmed changes, verified from primary sources.

"The Employment Rights Act is a genuine shift in the law -- but a change only helps people who know about it," said founder Paul Keene. "Most workers still don't know they have three months to act before their right to claim expires permanently."
