The Hidden Crisis No One is Talking About

CHARLOTTE, N.C. & COLUMBIA, S.C. - EntSun -- Try to think back to 2020. Blank screens where preschool classrooms were missing!. Now, I would like you to fast forward to today. Those same kids walked into third-grade classrooms – Many with hidden gaps - more than one.

The Double Gap Crisis collides with Third Grade's "Read-to-Learn Cliff."  If you're the parent or teacher in this 2025-26 class, you may have already noticed the signs.

What Did Our COVID-19 Babies Miss?

Preschool is when young brains show signs of:

1. Executive function: Waiting your turn or focused without wiggling
2. Fine motor skills: Build hand muscles to write legibly
3. Social negotiation: Learns to ask nicely, share, and work together

Third grade is when early learners are assessed and tested on specific skills for the first time. 2025-25 students may have missed many of these skills (post-pandemic).

Results from 2020-21 (Covid-19):

• 52% of third graders score below phonics benchmarks
• Only 44% show age-appropriate math reasoning
• IEP referrals for focus are 3x higher than pre-pandemic years

   Ask: "Can you tie your shoes? Third graders are expected to tie their own shoes!
