The AI trends transforming HGV driver safety
EntSun News/11079540
SOUTHAM, U.K. - EntSun -- The logistics industry is demanding, and with those demands come dangers. The HSE has recently published the latest statistics for transportation and storage safety at work. An estimated 38,000 people experienced non-fatal injuries at work, a rate equivalent to 2.8% of workers in the industry, in addition to 11 fatal injuries.
A strong safety culture, effective risk management and operational compliance remain key, but there is now a powerful new tool in logistics safety - artificial intelligence. The use of AI in logistics is expected to grow significantly, with the AI in transportation market set to reach £7.4 billion globally by 2027, according to MarketsandMarkets.
Driver safety has had one of the highest adoption rates for AI integration. Based on recent industry reports, 49% of industry leaders use AI in safety and security for their fleets. 33% of supply chain professionals currently use AI for fleet safety monitoring, with 81% planning to implement solutions within the next 12 months.
Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) use in-cab cameras linked to AI agents to monitor driver behaviour in real-time, providing immediate feedback to reduce risky actions. For Oliver Lancaster, Invo Fulfilment's (https://invo-fulfilment.co.uk/) Director of Operations, DMS has been transformative."We already use AI. All of our vehicles are fitted with dash cams that face both inside the cab and externally. The footage is constantly monitored by an AI system that picks up potential dangers, potential threats, and driver behaviour, both positive and negative. The AI actually live scans all of the footage at all times to identify potential issues such as fatigue or distraction, mobile phone usage, or a lack of seatbelt."

"It monitors driver behaviour such as close following, harsh braking, or harsh cornering, which allows us to nip any habits in the bud, and anything serious can be dealt with straight away. But primarily, it's a tool that helps us to coach drivers on better behaviour, which should reduce incidents and increase safety, which ultimately is our goal. We want our drivers to go home safe at the end of the day. So we already use AI. And for that, it is incredibly useful."
Lancaster also points out the importance of training in the use of any AI-powered system, "It relies on your set-up being accurate, and you have to have the right data to get the right outcome. So there's definitely a training need for our people to be able to harness the power of AI properly in a safe and secure manner, and with the proper oversight. That's absolutely vital for me." There's no doubt the age of AI in logistics is here to stay, and when it comes to reducing risk, it is a change to be welcomed by any safety-first transport business.
