Texas Opens Applications For Texas Education Freedom Accounts
EntSun News/11083648
~ Governor Greg Abbott has announced that families in Texas can now apply for the Texas Education Freedom Account (TEFA) program. This program, administered by the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts under Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock, aims to give parents more freedom and flexibility in choosing the best educational environment for their children.
According to Governor Abbott, this program will allow more parents to choose the learning environment that is best suited for their child's needs. He encourages all Texas families to apply for TEFA, stating that it puts parents in control of their child's education and sets students up for success. He also believes that this program will help Texas become the number one state for education.
Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock also praised Governor Abbott's leadership, stating that it was his unwavering support that made this moment possible for Texas families. She believes that TEFA will give families real options and flexibility in choosing the educational path that is best for their child, ultimately leading to their success.

The TEFA program was established through Senate Bill 2 (Creighton/Buckley), which was signed into law by Governor Abbott in May. This program allows eligible students to direct funding towards preapproved educational providers and services such as private school tuition, instructional materials, and educational therapies. With a budget of $1 billion for the 2026-2027 school year, this program will have the largest day-one launch in the country.
Families can apply for TEFA online from February 4 through March 17, 2026. All children living in Texas who are United States citizens or were lawfully admitted into the U.S are eligible to apply. It is important to note that this is not a first-come, first-served program and families can apply at any time during the application window without affecting their chances of receiving funding.
The required documents for the application can be found on the TEFA website. Governor Abbott and Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock are both hopeful that this program will provide families with more options and opportunities for their children's education, ultimately leading to a brighter future for Texas students.
